As part of the 20th Anniversary of the adoption of the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women (Convention of Belem do Para), the CIM, in partnership with the Division of Gender Relations of Saint Lucia will hold the Second OAS Conference and Validation Activity entitled: Evaluating National Initiatives and Producing Comparative Data on Violence against Women for the OECS States. This conference will be in Saint Lucia from September 23rd to September 24th, 2014 to present the results of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) sub-regional review conducted on state and civil society programmes to address violence against women within the last decade.

Agenda of the Conference.

This Conference follows up on the First OECS Roundtable held at the OAS Headquarters on September 30, 2011 in Washington, DC, which was convened to develop strategies for addressing Violence against Women in the OECS Member States and to promote the Follow-Up Mechanism to the Convention of Belem do Para (MESECVI). The first phase of this project has evaluated the main national strategies of state agencies and civil society on violence against women; and implementation of national policies and plans on violence against women in the 6 OECS project countries. This strategic sub-regional resource will enable OECS policymakers to better identify and address gaps in process and progress in addressing violence against women at both the national and sub-regional levels.

The results of this project have emphasized the need for more and better data. Further phases of the project are anticipated to build capacity and provide training in the OECS member states in data collection and management. What is needed in the OECS sub-region is an OECS portal for data on violence against women and gender-based violence for stakeholders to have better access to comparative empirical data on the characteristics, incidence and prevalence of domestic, inter-personal and sexual violence in the 6 OECS countries.
