Bahamas Supermarkets continues scholarship tradition

Nassau, Bahamas -- Bahamas Supermarkets Limited, which operates 11 City Market stores in New Providence and Grand Bahama continued its annual tradition of awarding scholarships to Bahamians interested in continuing their education.  Since 1968, Bahamas Supermarkets Limited has awarded more than 8 million dollars to 1,715 Bahamians through the Bahamas Supermarkets Foundation.  This year, in tough economic times, the Company allocated $60,000 towards scholarships for 12 students.  

“Bahamas Supermarkets Limited strongly believes in the value of education and we are committed to assisting the young people of The Bahamas by providing them with the opportunity to further their studies,” said Sunil Chatrani, CEO of Bahamas Supermarkets Limited.  The applicants who were chosen were recognized for their academic achievement, outstanding character, well-defined goals and strong work ethics.  They will pursue studies in diverse courses such as nursing, culinary arts, management, biology, biochemistry, sociology, architecture, Spanish, accounting as well as finance.  

At the Scholarship Awards evening held at Superclub Breezes on July 28th, Chairman of Bahamas Supermarkets Limited, Basil Sands congratulated the recipients and their parents.  “We are faced with many challenges but our Company remains steadfast and unwavering in our commitment to the youth of this great nation and to the education of those who represent the future of these islands.”  Mr. Sands challenged the students to “go on to bigger and brighter things and to make everyone proud.”

Bahamas Supermarkets Limited sponsored Culinary Student, Neucasha Greene through their Scholarship Foundation program. Greene, a student of The College of The Bahamas President’s Scholars Program graduated with Honours (Distinction) with an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts. Additionally, she received the Culinary Arts Award and the COB Leadership Alumni Award. Shown in the photo is Peter Goudie, Director of HR, Bahamas Supermarkets Limited and Neucasha Greene.
