The Bahamas is a nation founded and built upon Christian principles. It is therefore expected that this week and in particular during the weekend, a vast majority of Bahamians will commemorate and reflect upon the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The reality is that the Easter story is one that we can all relate to in our personal and professional lives. The suspension of all rallies and political activities by all political parties in observance of Holy week is welcome news as it suggests a certain level of reverence for religion and spirituality by our political leaders . However, one can’t help but wonder whether the candidates for this year’s general elections, leaders and aspiring leaders in general appreciate the true cost of leadership with all of its triumphs and trials...

Womens' Rights and the GOP

I am not American but I am A Woman; with an intellectual curiosity, an inquiring mind and a passionate respect for TRUTH.

Living on the American side of The Pond, I have recently found myself deluged with American Politics, especially relating to the battle to represent the Republican Party in the next race for the White House.

I have not only been disgusted by the vast sums of money being expended by the contestants in slandering fellow Republicans, but also by what appears to be a focus in undermining all positive endeavours to help the healing of the people and the country by blocking or trying to repeal bills wherever possible!. I am also aware that the U.S.A. does not have exclusivity in these tactics!

The Bahamas like many other nations around the world in this 21 st century is plagued with socio-economic challenges that seem to stifle the progress of our nation towards the path that leads to the desired level of peace, prosperity and security for our people. The economy is certainly uppermost in the minds of our people as we tread through these turbulent times with many looking to the government for solutions for our economic woes.

However, there is a growing concern over the increased level of social degradation that we are experiencing as evidenced by the myriad social issues that we are confronted with daily. Unfortunately, it appears that our young people continue to be the major casualties of this degradation. This impact on our youth raises the fundamental question: Are we failing our youth and will we continue to lose...

A cleaner, renewable Bahamas for sure. But it’s not going to happen overnight

I am about to graduate with a degree in electrical engineering and am planning to specialize in sustainable and renewable sources of energy. Admittedly, I haven’t quite got to the professional engineer status yet but most days I try and relate my studies to The Bahamas. I must give BEC and the Bahamian government credit. Running a power generation and distribution system is not easy. It is even more difficult when you consider the geographic make up of The Bahamas.

I would rather make a comparison of our electrical grid to that in North America, specifically Canada, since we derive our electrical code from them and not the UK or Europe.
