Nassau, The Bahamas – University of The Bahamas announces the appointment of Dr. Douglas Barkey as Dean, Liberal and Fine Arts which includes the Communication & Creative Arts and English Studies academic units. Dr. Barkey's appointment follows a comprehensive search process.

As Dean, Dr. Barkey is responsible for facilitating the delivery of academic programmes, including the development of new programmes and the systematic review, assessment and evaluation of existing ones while managing the academic, operational, fiscal and human resources of the Faculty of Liberal and Fine Arts (FLFA). Additional portfolio duties include academic policy review and development; monitoring student enrollment; and facilitating the timely completion of degree requirements.

Dr. Barkey is a higher education leader, teacher, and artist with international experience. Over the past two decades, he has been involved in post-secondary education for artists and designers, including administrative and instructional work in traditional and online classrooms for undergraduate and graduate studies.

His extensive administrative leadership experience includes positions as chair, school director and dean, supervising 31 different disciplines in the humanities, arts, and design. He has served as Director of the Altos de Chavón School of Design in the Dominican Republic, affiliated with Parsons School of Design of New York. In this position he expanded the reach of the school throughout the Caribbean Basin and created extensive outreach initiatives throughout the country. Over the years, he also held the positions of Chair of the Visual Arts Department at The Sage Colleges in Albany, New York, Vice President for Media WORKS Enterprise at Training and Development Corporation in Richmond, Virginia and founding Dean of The School of Arts & Design at Santa Fe Community College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. At his last position at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh he oversaw the development and design of the online classroom and instructional quality for all disciplines.


Dr. Barkey completed an International Baccalaureate degree at Asociación Escuelas Lincoln in Buenos Aires, Argentina, earned a B.A. in Fine Arts from Bethel University and an M.A. in Sculpture and an M.F.A. in Photography from the University of Iowa. He later completed a Doctorate in Education at Argosy University. His dissertation included new research in online studies that addressed student perceptions of instructor credibility in an exclusively Internet-based learning environment.

A practicing artist, his exhibits have included one-person shows at the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Victoria Price Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and many other group and individual shows.
