North Andros Island Administrator Ivan Ferguson urged students of the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) to remain focused on their goals – gaining important skills and building a knowledge base - which will allow them to successfully enter the agriculture and marine science fields as entrepreneurs or skilled employees who bring valued assets to the workplace.

Mr. Ferguson was invited to speak to the students as part of the Student Enrichment Series. Development by BAMSI’s Student Affairs Department, the Enrichment Series aims to help students build character, adopt healthy lifestyle practices, be more community minded and also focus on their studies and elevate their critical thinking skills. Mr. Ferguson encouraged students to resist the temptation to become bored with or distracted from the task at hand, telling them that the effort that they apply today in their studies at BAMSI would be worth the sacrifice in the long run and bring with it much reward.

Mr. Ferguson also discussed the importance of being a great leader instead of following the crowd – a move that often gets individuals in trouble. He tied this in with his role as Island Administrator, helping the students to understand how that role functions and what his responsibilities are.

No stranger to the BAMSI family, Mr. Ferguson has been a source of support and a frequent guest of the Institute. He has also been instrumental in assisting the institute with various projects whenever necessary.

‘Let’s Talk Sex’: BAMSI Students discuss health and well being of the
whole person

WHILE the primary focus of The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute is preparing a cadre of educated professionals in the agriculture and marine science fields, the Institute is also concerned with the holistic development of its student body. The Student Enrichment Series, which consists of seminars, volunteer opportunities, special events and programmes, was started by the Student Affairs Department to support the overall development of the young men and women at BAMSI.

Addressing the topic ‘Let’s Talk Sex’, Chief Nursing Officer Bridgette Evans, from the North Andros Clinic, visited the campus to speak to students about their sexual health.

Pointing out that education is the key to living a healthy lifestyle, she described the terrible impact sexually transmitted infections (STIs) could have on an individual’s body if they failed to protect themselves. She encouraged responsible sexual behavior and also empowered them to say no to sexual activity if they felt they were not ready.

Nurse Evans also urged students to be vigilant when it came to changes in their bodies and to seek appropriate medical care when something seems wrong.
