Nassau, Bahamas – The Bahamian Contractors’ Association (BCA) is pleased to announce their new board as a result of elections held on September 24, 2015. The nominations were received and voting conducted in pursuant to the rules of the Association. Some of the elected officials have served with the BCA for many years and joining are a few new members.

The board consists of: Leonard Sands, President, Tameka Hanna, Vice-President, Robyn Lee Oglvie, Secretary and Michael Pratt as Treasurer. Trustees include: Deborah Deal, Tony Joudi; and council members are: Charles Kemp, Danny Lowe Jr., Anthon Miller, Elvis Clarke, Odley Aritis and Charlene Collie. Serving as Immediate Past President is Godfrey Forbes.

“We are excited about the way ahead and will seek to bring about the kind of growth and development that our members have echoed in recent years,” said new president, Leonard Sands. “We recognize the mandate we have been given and we are ready to go about achieving the goals and objectives of the organization.”

The Bahamian Contractors’ Association was founded in 1958 and the new board is mandated to return to it’s founding principals of that to “Promote the consideration and discussion of all questions affecting the building trade, which is not exclusive to builders or contractors but everyone relating to the construction industry and most importantly, to protect its members individually and collectively.”

One of the achievements of the BCA was the drafting of the Contractors’ Bill which is currently in the hands of the Attorney General and the Minister of Public Works. The BCA will continue to work assiduously to get the Bill passed.

The Bahamian Contactors’ Association has seen a significant reduction in the participation of local contractors, architects, engineers, lawyers, realtors, vendors, suppliers, tradesmen and related professionals in the construction industry. One of their mandates is to address this issue with a view to protect and regulate the construction industry that sustains thousands of Bahamian households and businesses.

“For too long we looked at it as an issue for contractors of the built environment,” said Sands. “Today, we begin to look at it as an issue that affects everyone involved in the construction industry. All of us are stakeholders and it is time for us to come together to work on this challenge and protect the industry. If we fail to do that, we may soon find that the construction industry like many other industries in The Bahamas may also not be owned by Bahamians.”
