Response to Press Release by Pride Bahamas

The Bahamas Christian Council is deeply concerned about a recent press release by an organization identified as Pride Bahamas, announcing their intent to stage a series of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) events in October 2020. The Bahamas Christian Council does not support any plan to host public LGBT events anywhere within the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

While we appreciate that The Bahamas is a democracy which gives people the right to freedom of speech and expression from a legal perspective, as a body of churches we hold firmly to the tenets of our faith which speak directly to the lifestyle and practice of homosexuality.  We believe it is in direct contradiction to the teachings of the Bible as it relates to God’s divine plan for male and female existence and the natural purpose of their individual and unique physical construct, sexual identity and sexual expression. Romans 1: 26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting…

The Bible, in which we firmly believe, clearly states that homosexuality is a sin and that the practice of homosexuality is a violation to God’s natural design of and purpose for the human body and intercourse. We cannot in good conscience violate the written expressed will of God.

In addition, the constitution of our country in its preamble establishes that the foundation and moral compass of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is built on “Christian Values”. The perspective of “Christian Values” clearly favor the traditional family consisting of a man and a woman, husband and wife, as the natural God ordained relationship. We believe that the proposed pride events will be in direct contradiction to this aspect of our constitution. We also believe that the staging of such events will be in contravention of our societal norms as a sovereign nation where the overwhelming majority of our citizens disapprove of the public promotion of this lifestyle and behavior.  Furthermore, should this proposed event take the same tact of those held in other jurisdictions, which allow varying degrees of nudity and vulgar behavior, we believe this to be a violation of our nation’s decency laws.

Over the years, we have seen the social and moral impact of the introduction of Bahamas Carnival where men and women have been allowed to parade nearly nude throughout the streets of our country without restraint, performing all manner of contemptable and sexual acts on one another in full view of our children and the elderly. Pride events would have a further eroding effect of our historic and commonly accepted norms of decency in public behavior.

While we recognize that homosexuality and lewd public behavior are not the only sins which are committed in our country, we must do all in our power to stem the tide of sinfulness where we find it, especially en masse.  Though the daily work of the church is not publicized, the church is still a beacon of hope, help and redemption in this country.  Therefore, the Bahamas Christian Council, does not support nor will we sit idly and allow an even greater expression of indecency to be introduced and celebrated in our country. We will not hold our collective tongues nor our opposition to this proposed immoral week of activities.
