Bahamas Special Olympics Track & Field Championships Seeking Volunteers

Special Olympics Bahamas will hold its annual Track and Field Nationals on Saturday, May 28, at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium.

The event is expected to get underway with opening ceremonies at 9:30am with the “Parade of Athletes”,followed by the entrance of the games torch (Flame of Hope), brought into the stadium by the current class of recruits of the RBPF. The official opening will be performed by Min. of Social Services and Community Development - Hon. Melanie Griffin.

Over 55 athletes and coaches from Special Olympics programs in Abaco, Eleuthera and Grand Bahama will be in town to take part, joining over 60 athletes and coaches from the New Providence program, as well as athletes from various Special Needs schools based in New Providence.

Athletes will compete in traditional events such as the100m, 200m, 400m, 800 and the 4X100M and 4x400Mrelays, as well as the standing long jump, softball throw and others.

Our Goal this year is to have 1,000 "Fans in The Stands"The competition is expected to wrap up around 2:30pmwith a performance by the Bahamas All Star Band and a dinner party for the athletes.

They need...
-- Huggers/Greeters/High Fivers – Meet athletes at finish line, congratulate with hugs and high fives

-- Team Assistants – Assigned to various teams to assist with general supervision of athletes

-- Kitchen Assistants – assist with packaging and distribution of snacks

-- Results Runners – Take official results from results booth to MC/Medal presentation area

-- Staging – Assist with escorting athletes to and from competition area

-- Announcers Booth Assistants – Assist with announcements

-- Fans in the Stands – Organized cheering section

-- Staging area for Medal Presentations – persons to assist with organizing athletes for medal presentations

-- Restroom Monitors – ensure proper order near/at restroom area.

-- Water Station Monitors – ensure athletes and officials have an adequate supply of water at all times
