Freeport, Bahamas – Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company (BBB) announced on Friday its support of the 21st Annual Grand Bahama Regatta to be held at Tanio Beach, Freeport. Donating a cheque to help defray costs for hosting the event, the local brewery also announced that the very popular Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ Sculling Championships for 2016 would also take place at the July 21st event.

“We at the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company are proud to continue our support of the Annual GB Regatta, one that we believe is embedded in our culture as Bahamians” said Clayton Russell, BBB Assistant General Manager. “We know the committee will make this a world class event in the 2nd City, the Magic City of Freeport. Bringing tourists and locals together for a fun weekend of sailing, sculling and more!”

Mr. Russell was also pleased to announce the news about the Sculling Championships coming to Freeport for the first time. “This year we will also invite all our other island sculling winners to the GB Regatta for the ‘Man in the Boat’ Championships. It’s our first time to hosting the National Championships here at the home of the brewery and we are very honoured that everyone will come to Grand Bahama for this event,” said Russell. “We will have a parade of our sculling boats and winners from West End to Freeport and we encourage both women and men to participate in the Grand Bahama sculling competition on Saturday, the winners of which will compete against; Abaco, Andros Eleuthera, Exuma, Long Island and Nassau winners in the finals.”

Chervita Campbell, Chairman of the GB Regatta Committee was on hand at the Brewery presentation and was very pleased with the work that is happening and the support so far. “Plans are going well,” she noted. “We have been working on securing the entertainment portion of the event as of late, we are excited to note that “C” class boats from Long Island, Exuma and Andros will come up for the event.”

She went on to say, “We want to give our event a ‘down home flair’ and show the public the support GB has for this truly cultural event. We are so thankful to the Bahamian Brewery for once again leading the charge as a main sponsor and for supporting traditional sloop sailing in our Bahamas. The addition of the sculling races is such a huge bonus for us and shows the belief they have in our committee and the island at large.”

The ‘Man in the Boat’ races will take place on the evening of Saturday July 23rd, at the waters’ edge. The sculling races are held in 4 men (or women) heats, with participants using the traditional art of sculling to race from the coast to a designated buoy out to sea and back. Heat winners then compete against each other in a knock out competition style to find the winner. The island winners then compete in heats against each other until a final champion arises.

This years GB sculling winners will walk away with beer prizes and then the National Champion will receive not only the accolades of the Sculling Championship title but a substantive amount of their preferred Truly Bahamian Beer. “We encourage everyone to come out for the Regatta but especially to meet us on the beach on Saturday evening as we crown our sculling winners – anyone and everyone are welcome to enter at the event!”
