Nassau, Bahamas - Commonwealth Bank has seen the destruction of the massive earthquake that devastated Haiti and is moved to action as our neighbours continue to reel in the aftermath of this deadly earthquake that reduced much of its capital, Port-au-Prince, and killed tens of thousands of people.

'“The profound loss in Haiti is incomprehensible. We have seen the images and heard the stories being broadcast and our hearts go out to the people of Haiti who have endured this unthinkable tragedy,” William B. Sands, Jr., the bank’s President and CEO said in a statement.  “Commonwealth Bank extends its deepest condolences to those in Haiti affected by this tragedy and to their family members and friends residing here in The Bahamas.”

The bank pledges support to the National Haiti Disaster Relief effort and has put in place a multifaceted approach to collect funds which it hopes will provide the medication, food and the support that Haiti so desperately needs. Commonwealth Bank is urging employees, customers, noncustomers and community members to make cash donations to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort at any branch location, Monday through Friday and on Saturday at the Golden Gates and Prince Charles Drive branches between 10:00 am and 1:00pm.  Donations can also be made via CB On-line through the "Bill Pay" feature at www.combankltd.com.

In addition to cash donations collected in the branches and CB On-Line, Commonwealth Bank has pledged to donate $1.00 each time customers use SunCard to make purchases through March 31, 2010.

The bank recognizes the enormous challenges ahead for this nation that has suffered many decades of poverty and natural disasters and will continue to look for opportunities to assist the people of Haiti in their efforts to rebuild their country post-crisis.

“You cannot help but feel the pain in Haiti and sympathize over the abject grief at so many lives lost and so many hanging in the balance.” Mr. Sands went on to say “The bank’s culture and history dictate that we, as good corporate citizens, respond and we hope that our donation will help provide a measure of comfort in the wake of such a catastrophic event.”

Donations from Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort will be presented to the Government of The Bahamas on behalf of the National Disaster Relief Fund.

Commonwealth Bank is one of the largest and most successful banks in The Bahamas, with more than 6,500 shareholders and over $1.3 billion in assets. The Bank continues to lead the industry in service and convenience with eleven branches in New Providence, Abaco and Grand Bahama and has a community giving program that helps support numerous causes vital to the social development of our nation. In 2010, Commonwealth Bank will celebrate fifty years of banking excellence.
