Nassau, Bahamas - Community and national pride were on full display this Independence Day, when the residents of Big Pond Subdivision mounted an Independence Block Party in order to bring together the generations of families coming out of the community.

The idea came about after the funeral of longtime resident, Mary Swaby, in December 2016. Big Ponders, Rosie and Christine Munnings, encouraged residents to arrange the block party. The event became reality on July 10, 2017 when Water Street was cordoned off for the block party, where many of the original residents of Big Pond returned to the neighborhood. Many of them brought their children, who had never lived in the community, to meet former and present residents.

Big Pond is one of the Bahamas government’s early low cost housing developments. It opened in the early 1970s.

The block party event incorporated all-Bahamian music, food, and national colours.
