Nassau, Bahamas - ….As part of its ongoing community outreach initiative, Consolidated Water Co. Ltd. (CWCO) has made a donation to the PACE (Providing Access to Continued Education) programme to help in the purchase of supplies and personal care items for the teenage, mother-to-be students enrolled.

CWCO Accounts Manager and Administrative Assistant Welliya Cargill said the company recognized the societal importance of the PACE programme and wanted to support the organisation with a financial donation.

“PACE has always been an important educational foundation for those students expelled from school for being pregnant. We recognize that without the proper training and continued education offered at PACE, these young ladies would be ill-prepared for mother-hood and for a return to school to finish their studies. We believe that this is a very important programme and we are very pleased to support PACE with this CWCO donation,” Mrs. Cargill said.

According to the 2013 Vital Statistics Report produced by the Department of Statistics there were 455 births to girls under the age of 19 in that year. Indeed birth rates to this group have been reducing consistently year on year for some time now. PACE President Sonia Brown said “statistics have also shown that less than 9% of these girls have another child while still in their teens. We believe that we have been instrumental in making a difference to this group.”

The PACE Foundation was established for first-time pregnant teens expelled from school. PACE classes help them stay current with their scholastic education whilst learning to become responsible mothers. After the birth of their child the majority of them return to school to graduate and are able to positively contribute to society.

PACE Principal, Jacqueline Knowles, thanked CWCO for the donation noting that it would assist with the everyday needs of the students.

“We are very appreciative of this donation from CWCO; it is very timely as we are in the process of relocating to a much larger facility on East Street and we need all the help we can get!  I am elated that CWCO chose to donate to these young girls who are in much need of personal care items and supplies for their babies to come; and we will use this donation to get as much as we can for them,” Ms. Knowles said.

Ms. Knowles added that every donation is needed, appreciated and put to good use.
