Nassau, N.P - Activities & Events Coordinator of the Barraterre Development Association Sharlene McKenzie invited members of the public to the Barraterre annual homecoming in Exuma this year from June 7 to June 10. At a recent cheque donation from Consolidated Water (Bahamas) Ltd. (CWCO) to help fund the activities, she urged the public to attend. “Come on down to Barraterre, Exuma – the ‘City by the Sea’ – and join us for our 36th annual homecoming. We have sloop racing, a live native band, quadrille dancing, the maypole, a conch-cracking contest, conch salad making, watermelon eating – everything native, and we want you there to enjoy it.” Barraterre is a small community in Exuma of about roughly 200 people that embodies the philosophy of being “thy brother’s keeper.” According to Ms. McKenzie, “The Barraterre Development Association is a non-profit organization that organizes events every year to help better our community, and whatever it is in need of we try to assist with.” Association Consultant Shantel Taylor explained, “We have an executive board of about 12 people, and then of course it’s all about teamwork – that’s how we get everything done. It’s a community-minded effort, so everybody from the community comes together and just chips in wherever the need is.” In addition to planning their homecoming, Ms. McKenzie said the Association is currently working on two major projects. “We’re trying to revamp an old schoolhouse into a community center, and also construct a basketball court named after one of our great pastors from Barraterre, Solomon McKenzie. Over the Easter break we’ll be doing some clean-up work at the school, and we’re also going to get the ball rolling for the homecoming festival. So CWCO’s donation will go a long way.” CWCO, whose Operations Manager Jeff Burrows is a “born and bred” Barraterre native, has been supporting the Barraterre Development Association “for as long as we can remember,” according to Ms. Taylor. “On behalf of our president Ms. Annie Lloyd and the executive members, we want to say thanks so much to CWCO. Their contribution goes a long way, and we appreciate them partnering with us. Also, Jeff Burrows has been an integral part in our community and association. He’s one of our go-to guys, always willing to help, and a real team leader. He’s one of us.” Ms McKenzie said, “Barraterre is a well-loved community, and we’re just trying to make it better. So once again, join us from June 7 to June 10 at ‘the City by the Sea,’ downtown Barraterre, Exuma. You’ll have a great time. You don’t have to buy tickets for the festival – just get your WesternAir or BahamasAir tickets, or catch the boat, catch a helicopter – do whatever you have to do to join us for our 36th annual homecoming.
