Guidance
counsellors from the public and private school system have re-committed
themselves to the best practices of their profession
at their recent annual workshop held at The College of The Bahamas
Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute.
Hosted
by The College of The Bahamas, in collaboration with the Bahamas
Financial Services Board and the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism
Association, the workshop was held in observance of National Career
Awareness Month in October under the theme P.R.E.P.A.R.E.
Addressing the professionals, Assistant Director of Education Keishan Bastian said these workshops are vital to the education
system and nation building as guidance counsellors play an integral role in the nurturing of students.
“Let us work passionately with our youth. They are the future of the nation,” she urged.
She also encouraged the counsellors to diligently prepare students for the labour market.
“Each and every child has a talent and we should not stop until we’ve helped to bring it out of them,” Ms.
Bastian added.
During the one-day event, the sessions were designed to reinforce the importance of counsellors in the lives
of students and highlight the diverse careers to which students may aspire.
Dr. Eslyn Jones, Vice President of Student Affairs at The College of The Bahamas also stressed the important
of counsellors being actively engaged in the nurturing process.
“These
workshops are beneficial to the education system and have helped a
great deal in encouraging both
counsellors and students…As counsellors, we are mothers, fathers,
mentors, life changers and door openers. We help education to be what it
is,” Dr. Jones said.
Guidance counsellors are an essential part of the education system as they help students to discover their
hidden potential, embrace their strengths, and identify opportunities for growth as they develop into engaged citizens.
