Dear College of The Bahamas Community, Parents, Alumni, Donors and Friends,

As you know, in some communities in New Providence, Andros and Grand Bahama Hurricane Matthew left tremendous devastation in its wake. Some families have been left in dire straits and with enormous needs. In some cases, public infrastructure and commercial operations have been severely impacted.

Compassion compelled us to act quickly in extending a level of comfort and relief to our faculty, staff and students who were directly impacted by the hurricane. This week, we are coming together as a College family to provide a network of support. We have opened the Oakes Field and Grosvenor Close Campuses as sanctuaries for employees, students and their immediate family who may wish to utilise our computer equipment, wireless Internet, electricity, shower facilities and cafeterias.

We have also begun to assess the needs of students, faculty and staff due to the hurricane. In short order, we will announce exactly how we will mobilise much-needed relief for our College family and on a national level. We invite you to join us in these efforts as we seek to restore and rebuild.

At our various campuses in New Providence, Grand Bahama and San Salvador the damage caused by Hurricane Matthew ranged from minimal to moderate. Our Oakes Field Campus sustained the most damage including uprooted vegetation; damage to roofs, windows and perimeter fencing and water intrusion. Our student residential facility on Gregory Street also has roof damages. These all are being repaired and restored.

On Monday October 10th we announced that classes will resume at the Oakes Field, Grosvenor Close and Northern Bahamas Campuses on Monday, October 17th. Due to the enormity of the devastation in some Grand Bahama communities, we are also assessing the needs of our students and employees in order to provide relief.

On Tuesday October 11th I, along with senior administrators, met with faculty and staff in New Providence to reassure them of our support and advise them of our initial relief and restoration plans. A similar meeting was held on Wednesday, October 12th with students.

Now, more than ever, we are drawing on the resilient spirit that defines the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. We shall rebuild and we stand in support of all Bahamian citizens.

Thank you for your support and concern for our College of The Bahamas family. We will provide periodic updates to keep you informed of our Hurricane Matthew response and rebuilding efforts.
