Nassau, BAHAMAS - Ambitious students seeking opportunities for development in leadership skills and a uniquely designed scholarship opportunity attended the Department of Student Leadership’s President’s Scholars Programme’s open house held on April 12th, 2016 at The College of The Bahamas’ Harry C. Moore Library and Information Centre. The event allowed students hear about scholarship opportunities, selection criteria and the application process.

The President's Scholars Programme (PSP) is a four-year scholarship and personal development programme designed to identify a limited number of outstanding students, foster their intellectual growth, refine their leadership skills and enhance their relationship with The College of The Bahamas. The PSP consists of select students with a wide range of beliefs, ideals and talents who are encouraged to work and learn together. They are united in their commitment to the pursuit of excellence and to the cultivation of their skills for service. As the name of the programme suggests, the President's Scholars have the benefit of the President as their patron and mentor.

“PSP is the premier academic and leadership focus program for the College of The Bahamas. We pride ourselves in challenging our students to go above and beyond in and outside of the classroom, while supporting them through their journey to matriculation,” explains Joe Stubbs, Director of Student Leadership & International Relations.

Students chosen for the President's Scholars Programme are awarded a full academic scholarship. Family Island and international students who qualify will also receive assistance with room and board in the dormitories. The PSP Scholarship is renewable annually for up to four years if members maintain high academic standards while exercising practical leadership in college activities and the wider community.

PSP applications are carefully reviewed by a small committee and selected individuals are invited to campus for an interview. After the personal interview process has been completed, the names of students are recommended to the President for final approval prior to notification.

Elise Barnett is the current President’s Scholar for the 2015-2016 school year. “Being awarded the President’s Scholar Award was one of my greatest scholastic accolades. The programme fosters intellectualism through mentorship, and cultivates some of the most driven and innovative scholars,” Barnett says.

She recently met with President Rodney Smith and discussed her future goals and aspirations. Dr. Smith will meet with Ms. Barnett on a monthly basis to mentor her.

“Though the transition to tertiary education has not been particularly easy, being a part of this programme has made developing leadership skills more feasible than imagined. The lessons I have learnt through the duration of my first semester have impacted me heavily; I grasped the importance of organization, conscientiousness and social networking,” Barnett adds on her experience in the programme.

Membership in the PSP is merit-based and each scholar must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5. The scholarship is renewable annually for up to four years; members must maintain high academic standards while exercising practical leadership in college activities and the wider community.

Since 2006, when the programme began, generous donors have been investing in the potential of these scholars to become leaders in their own right, capable of building The Bahamas in key ways. J.S. Johnson Company Ltd. is currently the primary donor for the PSP scholarship.
