The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) notes the recent announcement by the Minister of Social Services that four employees of a local children’s home have been relieved of their duties. We also welcome the news that this matter has been turned over to the Royal Bahamas Police Force for further investigation.

We reiterate the need for enhanced scrutiny of the qualifications and training of individuals charged with the care of this most vulnerable population. Proper strategies must be devised and implemented to ensure that these children’s rights to protection, education, healthcare, shelter and good nutrition.

It is our recommendation that all children’s homes in our nation undergo annual assessments of their ability to carry out the relevant duties on behalf of the government. This is important because the future success or failure of The Bahamas depends on the health and wellbeing of our nation’s children.

We must cultivate innovative, creative and forward thinking minds. The DNA’s revolutionary platforms for education, healthcare, agriculture and food security, the orange economy and youth development lays the foundation on which the New Bahamas will be built. Our children’s health and future transcends politics; hence, we offer to collaborate with the government on this important subject.
