Coral Harbour Base (RBDF) – A total of 50 Cadets from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Rangers programme completed a three-week leadership exercise at the SURE facility, Gladstone Road. Attended by Captain Tellis Bethel, Commander Defence Force (Acting) along with Senior Officers and proud parents and guardians, and members of the Rangers Parents In Action Group, the ceremony showcased a cadre of young Rangers aspiring to join the Defence Force. The training curriculum was conducted for high school students who are currently enrolled in the Rangers program. The program covered a variation of professional and fitness subjects taught to Defence Force recruits. The training also served as a Defence Force recruit preparatory or "feeder" program for this group of Rangers.
During this first-of-its-kind program, students, whose ages ranged from 14 to 17, were given insight into the first three weeks of a Defence Force recruit training regimen. The thirteen disciplines covered included Navigation, Firefighting, Ship Husbandry, Communications, Leadership, Rules of the Road and First Aid. In his remarks, Captain Tellis Bethel, Commander Defence Force (Acting) thanked Lieutenant Delvonne Duncombe, the Director of the Rangers program and his core of instructors for their commitment to the success of the program, as well as Miss Terica Russell, the President of the Parents In Action Group and her team for their invaluable support.
Captain Bethel informed parents that the Rangers program is focused on preparing Rangers for future employment in the Defence Force as well as the commercial maritime sector. He also challenged the Rangers to become “Weapons of Mass Construction” as they continue to strive for excellence at school and within their communities. Special awards during the ceremony were given to Joseph Smith Jr., who walked away as the Most Outstanding Male Cadet Trainee, and Razhena Arthur, who was presented with the Most Outstanding Female Cadet Trainee.
