U.S. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. John L. Armstrong with Durante Charlow, one of the top winners in the U.S. Embassy’s 8th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest.

Nassau, Bahamas - On April 1, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. John L. Armstrong visited Doris Johnson Senior High School to formally recognize 11th grade student Durante Charlow, one of the three top winners of the U.S. Embassy’s 8th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest. The recognition ceremony was held during an 11th grade assembly, where faculty, staff and Durante’s peers were on hand to celebrate his accomplishment with him.
During the presentation, Chargé Armstrong used the opportunity to highlight the significance of the annual competition that encourages high school students nationwide to discuss how they apply Dr. King’s legacy and principles to promote social justice, human rights and equality in their individual communities. Durante also read an excerpt of his winning speech that focused on the life of Sir Etienne Dupuch who he identified as a champion in his own right. The Chargé then presented Durante with his award, a new iPad mini and certificate of appreciation. After graduation, Durante plans to study biological sciences and history when he attends college. He is very interested in Bahamian history and plans to keep writing about various Bahamian leaders.
