More than 140 employees from the Department of Environmental Health and the Department of Housing toured three national parks on New Providence recently as part of World Environment Month activities. The tour was organized by Director of Environmental Health, Melanie McKenzie, in co-operation with the Bahamas National Trust.

The employees visited Bonefish Pond (a mangrove wetland), Primeval Forest (an old growth forest), and the Retreat (which features a special collection of rare palm trees). “We wanted to expose our staff to the national parks here on New Providence and The BNT helped to organise the guided tours and lunch at the Retreat after the tours,“ Ms McKenzie said. World Environment Month was created by the United Nations to inspire people to take action to prevent abuse of the Earth’s natural systems from reaching a breaking point.

The 2016 theme highlights the fight against the illegal trade in wildlife, which erodes biodiversity and undermines our economies, communities and security. The national parks of the Bahamas are treasure stores of biodiversity,“ according to BNT Education Director Portia Sweeting. “It was a great opportunity to share information about the natural systems protected in our New Providence Parks with the staff of the Department of Environmental Health."
