Freeport, Grand Bahama - The Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Foundation (GBDRF), being the charitable arm of the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA), in partnership with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), continues to provide home repairs and furnishings to families affected by the devastation of Hurricane Dorian on the island.

Launched in December 2019, the GBDRF’s Home Repair program has received nearly two thousand applications to-date. Eligible applicants were matched with local and international non-profit organizations, who provide mucking and gutting services, mold remediation, roof repair, rebuilding, appliances and furniture.

In discussing how eligibility is determined, GBPA President Ian Rolle said, “Applications were reviewed to ensure that all necessary information was provided, and then sent to the NGOs for handling. During the first 48 hours of the launch last year, our GBPA teams registered more than one thousand applications from residents.  Although we experienced some delays in home remediation efforts during the holiday season and now with COVID-19, our volunteer teams remain committed to working safely and, in view of the onset of the 2020 hurricane season, as quickly as they can,” Mr. Rolle continued. “The GBDRF remains very focused on providing relief and assistance to needy families.”

In support of the program, the GBDRF provided assistance in-kind, funding for materials, furniture and appliances, also in developing the Home Repair program website used to connect residents with NGOs.

As work continues, NGOs including SBP, Rotary, Samaritans Purse and individual volunteers are providing daily assistance through the program. “We are truly thankful to all those who continue to partner with us to help residents restore their homes,” Mr. Rolle added.

As of 22nd June, 2020, the Home Repair program is unable to accept additional applications for home repair, appliances or furniture. All applications received as of the closing date will be processed based on eligibility and in the order received. Residents with questions about the GBDRF’s Hurricane Dorian relief efforts can send an email to info@gbdisasterrelief.org or visit the website at gbdisasterrelief.org.
