Nassau, Bahamas - The Health Professions Council (HPC) is in the process of expanding their horizons by introducing 30 additional health professions to their present list which consists of:Acupuncture Therapy, Audiology and Speech Language Pathology, Chiropody and Podiatry, Chiropractic, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics and Nutrition, Emergency Services Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Occupational Therapy, Optometry and Opticianary, Physiotherapy and Respiratory Therapy, and Radiography.

The new listing of health professions under consideration can be found on the HPC website at www.bahamashpc.com under the “New Professions” page. Persons practicing in these fields are urged to contact the HPC to obtain further information and to provide necessary assistance.

The HPC is a statutory body which was established by the Health Professions Act in 1998 and became operational on May 1, 2000 with a mission “to govern the professional conduct of certain health professionals and to protect the welfare and interest of these professionals as well as the public who makes use of their services.”

Chairman, Dr Charles Diggiss stated: “The Council has continued to successfully carry out its mandate, and being aware of the expanded scope of health professionals operating in the country, it is necessary to include as many of these health professions as possible in order to ensure that they are held to the highest standards, and that the public is adequately protected. The Council has also embarked upon a review of all local allied health programmes to ensure that they meet acceptable standards.”

HPC Registrar, Ms Bernadette Ellis, stated: “Many persons are not aware of what the HPC is all about, nor the important role that it plays. Not only do we welcome the allied health professionals’ feedback, but we encourage the public’s comments as well.

“Students contemplating entering the health care professions by taking courses either locally, regionally or internationally are asked to check with the HPC to ensure that the programmes of study and training are recognized and approved by the Council.”

The HPC recently re-located to new premises at Adel House, #17 East Avenue, Centreville. They can be contacted at P.O.
