Nassau, Bahamas — During the 2020 Christmas season, the Operation Feed the Needs programme of New Providence Community Church (NPCC) raised $32,000 for families from Grand Bahama and Abaco that were impacted by Hurricane Dorian. The programme’s ‘Help a Victim’ holiday initiative brought Christmas cheer to almost two hundred families by providing them with two weeks of meals and a turkey. In support of these efforts and the organization’s continued community support into 2021, ENKA, the general contractor for Nassau Cruise Port Ltd. (NCP), recently made a generous donation to the organization. “Our ‘Help a Victim’ programme was a really nice project that worked out really well”, said Mr. Walter Ferguson, Volunteer Coordinator at NPCC. Underscoring that the need for assistance is still great, Mr. Ferguson added that the donation presented by ENKA will be a great help to the programme. “On behalf of New Providence Community Church and Operation Feed the Needs, we are grateful that, because of donations like yours, we can continuously assist. Thank you for being a corporate sponsor in our community,” he said. Although the ENKA team has only been stationed in The Bahamas for a short time, they have already felt the warmth of the Bahamian community. They are, however, very aware of the impact Hurricane Dorian continues to have on the country and saw fit to help. “As we now feel like members of the community, we know that we cannot only be there for one another during better times. We must also be there during suffering, so we are doing our best to help,” said Mr. Levent Ustaoglu, ENKA Project Manager. He continued: “We know that after Hurricane Dorian there has been great pain and we want to be a part of the relief process.” Mr. Lionel Turnquest, Director of Projects and Facilities at Nassau Cruise Port Ltd., applauded ENKA for immediately embracing the opportunity to be a partner in corporate sponsorship. “We are very glad and proud that we brought on board a contractor who is community-oriented and is making a positive impact in many ways - not just in helping to build a new facility that will enhance the entire country through economic input,” he said. “As corporate citizens, we thought that at this time with so many people suffering from the result of the economic downturn due to events like Hurricane Dorian and COVID-19, it was prudent for us to reach out and support those, like NPCC, who are making a great difference,” Mr. Turnquest added. This year, as job opportunities begin to open in Abaco, NPCC hopes to create a programme that will allow displaced families to return home quickly and comfortably. The project will bring new life into Downtown Nassau by providing visitors with an authentically Bahamian experience that will promote our culture and heritage while creating opportunities for Bahamian businesses to grow and thrive. It is anticipated that the project will serve as a catalyst for the revitalization of downtown Nassau and will provide a substantial economic boost to the country for many years.
