Nassau,Bahamas Paradise Island - One hundred and four players took part in the 10th Annual Duke of Edinburgh Charity Golf Tournament. The players, many of whom have been participating in the tournament for a number of years, hit Ocean Club Golf Course early Sunday morning (June 27th, 2010).

With the help of major sponsors like Bahamas Food Services, Tyreflex Motors, SunTee, John Bull and British Airways; Kerzner International was able to donate $45,000.00 to the Governor General Youth Awards Program (GGYA). Over the last decade their collective contribution has hit the $650,000.00 mark.

Chairman of the Governor General Youth Board of Trustees H.E. Orville Turnquest along with Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes and Victor Chandler Chairman of the National Council for GGYA accepted the cheque presented to him by Kerzner President and Managing Director, George Markantonis.

The GGYA Chairman thanked Kerzner International for its continued support of perhaps the largest single fundraising initiative of the youth program. He also took the opportunity to give a special award to Ed Fields, Kerzner Senior VP of Public Affairs, for his dedication to organizing the event over the last ten years. He also presented a plaque to Tim Yavello and the management and staff of Ocean Club Golf Course for their hard work in running the event.

In his brief address Markantonis remarked on Kerzner’s commitment to supporting the GGYA and the tournament, “This tournament has become a part of the fabric of our clubhouse.”

Also on hand for the awards ceremony was Governor General H.E. Arthur Foulkes who thanked Kerzner International, “For being interested and actively participating in the growth and development of our nation’s youth.

“This year marks the 10th consecutive year for the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Cup Golf Tournament, which is one of the major annual fund-raising activities of the Governor General’s Youth Award.”

While the considerable charitable donation is the most important aspect of the tournament, there is another major incentive for the players; a chance to represent The Bahamas at the Duke of Edinburgh Cup Finals in Windsor, Great Britain (sponsored by British Airways).

Last year, Ted Adderley and Neil O’Brien participated in the tournament in Great Britain and called it a great experience.

At Sunday’s tournament, Richard Love and Larry Black finished second, after a five hole count back against third place winners Patrick Knowles and Ryan Knowles, with a score of 63 net.

The tournament winners were Tom McDermott and Peter Waller who finished with a score of 60 net.

McDermott and Waller walked away with crystal trophies and will be joined by Love and Black as all four men will represent The Bahamas. They’ll spend 4 days playing at the prestigious Wentworth Golf Club with the hopes of joining the ranks of other past Bahamian winners like Thomas Bethel who won the competition in 2006 Dean Hogaboam who came 3rd in 2004.

Other noteworthy finishers at the 10th Annual Duke of Edinburgh Golf Tournament were as follows:

In the ladies’ category Yvonne Maissen swept the ladies category winning closest to the pin, longest drive and straightest drive.

In the men’s category, Ossie Moore was closest to the pin.

Neil Williams had the longest drive.

Steve Watson had the straightest drive.

In the foursome’s category the standings looked like this:

1st place - Team SunTee: Tom McDermott, Peter Waller, Peter Muscroft and Paul Fox

2nd place - Team Odyssey Aviation: Billy Holowesko, Philip Dunkley, Steven Kelly and Thomas Bethel

3rd place – Team Bahama Wall: Harry Lewis, Charles Christie, Ray Gibson and Chris Darville
