At Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) the International Baccalaureate (IB) inquiry-based curriculum allows for students at all ages to undertake in-depth exploration of concepts in a variety of different themes. At the end of the school year, the Grade 3 students embarked on an inquiry about simple machines and how they make lives easier. During this investigation, the students realised that a wheelchair is a machine that continues to make life easier for many, especially children with disabilities. With this knowledge, they took action - they raised money to purchase wheelchairs for the Bahamas Association for the Physically Disabled (BAPD).

Grade 3 teacher Ms. Erin Fox explained the process, “During this inquiry, the students created a cardboard arcade, set up a donation boxes and invited the school to participate. Also, once understanding how an economy works, they created business plans, designed products and sold them at their own Mini-Mall. The students worked very hard and were successful in raising over $1,500 to purchase not only one but several wheelchairs. We were delighted to partner with BAPD and support children in the community.”

The wheelchairs are currently on order and are being personalised to meet the needs of the children selected.
