Nassau, Bahamas : Lend a Hand Bahamas , a Bahamian nonprofit organization, is pleased to announce a charitable contribution of $50,000 from Kiril Sokoloff of Lyford Cay who has worked closely with its POA to help the Bahamian people , which will be matched $1 for $1 by GlobalGiving. This donation will help enhance vital food security in the Bahamas.

I am thrilled to make a $50,000 contribution to Lend a Hand Bahamas. I can think of no greater priority than helping to support efforts to make sure that all Bahamians have food to eat in these incredibly painful and difficult times. The new World Order as I see it is cooperation not competition, the common interest not personal interest and shared sacrifice rather than scorched-earth policies. While I have made much larger contributions anonymously to many Bahamian causes, including hurricane relief efforts, I want to publicize this as an inspiration to others to contribute as best they can to this noble and essential effort. We are in this together. As the great Gandhi once said: “All of us are one. When you inflict suffering on others, you are bringing suffering on yourself. When you weaken others, you are weakening yourself, weakening the whole nation.” - Kiril Sokoloff

The economic devastation to other parts of the country resulting from Hurricane Dorian this past fall combined with heavy impacts of COVID-19 has greatly affected the Bahamas as the unemployment rate could soon hit 30 percent with 25,000+ individuals currently laid off. The unemployment number is growing daily. Food security continues to be insufficient, and the need for support from private individuals to fight hunger is high, especially to meet short-term needs over the next few months.

“We are pleased to receive this support from the Sokoloff Family to help feed thousands of people in the months to come,” said Lucas Metropulos, Founder and Board Chairman of Lend a Hand Bahamas.

About Lend a Hand Bahamas

Lend a Hand Bahamas (LAHB) was founded in 2014 to address the growing need for more opportunities and activities in socio-economically disadvantaged communities of the Bahamas. The main model for community development has been created in the downtown area of Grant’s Town (Over-the-Hill) in Nassau, Bahamas where for the past two years LAHB has been working with over 200 children and teens as well as senior citizens and adults on a variety of educational and community empowerment initiatives.

Post-Hurricane Dorian, LAHB supported evacuees that fled to Nassau as well as coordinated shipments of goods and monetary resources to Abaco and Grand Bahama. Now in yet another crisis, LAHB has stepped forward to tackle the growing food insecurity in Nassau. Over the past eight weeks, LAHB has delivered over 3,000 grocery bags full of food items to those in need of Adelaide, Gambier, Mt. Pleasant, and Over-the-Hill communities.
