March and Rally: "No Bail Let Capital Punishment Prevail" event set for May 3rd

At present, incidences of crime, violent crimes in particular, continue to increase in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Murders continue to devastate and destabilize families while simultaneously leaving citizens and communities in fear for their lives. Citizens of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas must mobilize themselves and speak with one voice to demonstrate to the criminal element that we will no longer live in fear. We must protest the murders and the violence and embark upon a unified program of action to take back our streets and protect our families.

As such, The No Spin Zone, a popular Facebook group, in conjunction with Khandi Gibson of Families of Murdered Victims (FOAM) and Troy Garvey of Determined for Absolute Change (DFAC) invite all concerned Bahamians to participate in the ‘No Bail Let Capital Punishment Prevail on May 3, 2014 at 9am. Our objectives include but are not limited to:

1. No bail for individuals accused of murder or attempted murder

2. The carrying out of the death penalty within a reasonable amount of time after an offender is sentenced to death

3. The removal of the Privy Council as the court of last resort in The Bahamas through legislation

4. The raising of awareness regarding citizen responsibility in combating crime

5. Securing financial assistance and other means of support for family members of murder victims

The March will begin at Christie Park and move onto Cumberland and Bay Streets culminating at Rawson Square with a Pep Rally. Community speakers will address the Pep Rally. We invite all interested persons and the general public to attend this non-political event.

When asked why she felt so strongly about this issue of crime, one of the leaders of the group organizing the march, Margo Seymour said, “we love or nation and when there is something threatening it to its core, we all have a duty to stand up and speak out”.
