Nassau, Bahamas - On Wednesday July 30th, 2014, Hon. L. Ryan Pinder, Member of Parliament for the Elizabeth Constituency in partnership with The Bahamas Human Society conducted a vaccination exercise at Thelma Gibson Primary School that led to 160 dogs in the community receiving free vaccinations to protect dogs against the canine distemper disease.

Canine Distemper is an extremely contagious viral disease that has been linked to the deaths of an estimated 800 Bahamian dogs to date. As a result, The Bahamas Humane Society sought the assistance from The International Humane Society which led to the receipt of 1000 vaccines. Additionally, the Cabinet of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas has also approved 5000 additional vaccinations.

For the information of those that have had the unfortunate mishap of losing their dogs to the disease, The Government has made arrangements with Waste Management Ltd for the proper disposal of the remains. Considering the level of contagiousness of infected dogs, the public is encouraged to utilize this service.

On August 13th, 2014, those residents that received the first round of vaccine are urged to return to Thelma Gibson Primary School, Elizabeth Estates, for their dogs to receive a follow-up examination and vaccination. Vaccinations will be conducted during the hours of 2-7pm.

Minister Pinder would also like to extend his appreciation to Dr. Solomon Kwakye, Dr. Isash Hanson, Dr. Shekera McQuay, Dr. Keith Cox and all of the support staff at The Bahamas humane Society who conducted the initiative yesterday.
