T he Bahamas Girl Guides Association continues to celebrate its 100th Birthday with hosting Guides from around The Bahamas at “Camp Areitos”. On Monday,6th April,2015 in St. John’s College Auditorium, the guides, leaders, parents and guests gathered for the official opening ceremony of a week long camp at the Campsite on Marshall Road.

Through song, drama and dance , the Guides from Grand Bahama, Abaco, Eleuthera, Exuma and New Providence reminded the audience of the contribution of Guiding over the last 100 years. A dramatic presentation entitled “One Hundred Years---Woman” written by Mrs. Scavella, Guider at Wesley Methodist Church and performed by several campers, highlighted the progress and contribution of women at a national level, whose lives and actions reflected the principles and values of Guiding.

The enthusiastic participation of the Honourable Melanie Griffin, Minister of Social Services, was a clear indication that she was a former Girl Guide. As the keynote speaker, she commended the Association for achieving an outstanding and remarkable milestone. The Minister noted that, ”You weathered the storm, and overcame the challenges to arrive at this very high point in your organization. You continue to demonstrate resilience, longevity, determination, persistence, and perseverance. Noble qualities by all standards.”

As a former guide at St. Joseph’s Company, she recalled the drills, the motto-“Be Prepared”, the Promise, ten Laws, values and life skills that were taught. Speaking specifically to the Guides, Minister Griffin said, “Despite the ever changing world, guiding and especially camping remain relevant to girls today. Camping teaches new skills and knowledge, problem solving and teamwork. There is a lot of laughter, a few culinary mistakes, self-esteem building as well as bonding, all in a safe nurtured and mentored environment.” She further stressed the importance of the values embedded in their Promise and Law : Duty to God, good citizenship, loyalty, helpfulness, politeness, respect, obedience and self- control. “These attributes are so needed in the society today by young people and adults”, said Minister Griffin.

She concluded her remarks by commending the former and current leadership of the Association for their contribution to the growth and development of girls and young women in The Bahamas. She challenged the Leaders and Guides to partner with the Ministry of Social Services in raising awareness and public education of school age girls in the efforts to eliminate violence against girls and young women.

The Chief Commissioner, Mrs. Nicolette Archer thanked the leaders, parents, girls and all Ministries and Corporations, Businesses, Council Members and supporters for their assistance with the Camp Areitos. They were all invited to Open House at Camp Discovery on Marshall Road on Thursday, 10th April 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M.
