Nassau, Bahamas - Minister of Education, Science and Technology, the Honourable Jerome Fitzgerald is still riding the wave of excitement. This time, he made a big splash with a school of Marlins at the Stephen Dillet Primary School. The Minister paid a special visit to the school to personally congratulate the 2nd place winner of the 2015 Bahamas National Spelling Bee Finals, Miss Jasmin Adamson, a 6th grader at the school.

In his address, Minister Fitzgerald praised Jasmin for her success and the fact that she was the only primary school student among the top three finalists. He stated that Jasmin is a testament that great things are happening in our public schools and that she is a role model for all students.

A very soft-spoken and shy Jasmin, humbly acknowledged her worthy competitors and stated , “I was happy that Charles won because he was the only boy and also, this is his last year to compete and I still have a few more years”. She also reflected on some of the negative comments that she heard and the expectation that a student from a “ghetto school” would not make it very far. She told her school mates that it doesn’t matter what school you attend, where you live or how much money you have, all that matters is your belief in yourself and your willingness to work hard.

Minister Fitzgerald spoke to the children and reiterated some of the things that Jasmin said; “students, do not allow people to tell you what you can, or cannot do just because you go to a particular school or live in a certain area; your circumstances do not have to define you.” He made this morning’s assembly quite interactive and engaging by asking questions and having students respond. When he told the students that they had to prepare, a first grader responded by stating, “that means you have to get ready!” to which the Minster said, “yes, you are absolutely correct”. The Minister praised Jasmin for her success but said to her that moving forward, “I want you to expect to win” as she had indicated that she did not go into the competition expecting to win. He told her from this day forth, she must always be confident and know that when she gives her best, she will always rise to the top.

There is no doubt that Stephen Dillet Primary is buzzing with excitement and all of the students are excited about the recent success of Jasmin Adamson. Jasmin admits to also being very excited and she along with her coach expressed their gratitude to the Minister, the school and all the individuals who assisted in the journey. The school, Jasmin, her parents and her coach were all humbled by the Minister’s appearance and thanked him for taking the time to personally extend his congratulations.

Her father said that he will always be there for his daughter and will never give up on her and her mother stated that parental involvement is not optional but a must. They were both filled with joy and pride and were happy to know that their daughter’s hard work, commitment and the sacrifices of all has paid off.

Jasmin’s excitement will continue for a while longer, as she will be traveling to Washington D.C. to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee which will take place 24th – 29th May, 2015.
