On Friday, June 24th, Nevar Smith, Acting Chief Councilor for the Freeport City Council on Grand Bahama paid a courtesy call on U.S. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Lisa Johnson at the United States Embassy in Nassau to discuss his recent participation in an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) professional exchange focused on “Advocacy and Education for At-Risk Youth.”

The exchange included twenty-five professionals from around the world including Johannesburg, Islamabad, Beirut, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico, Israel and the Caribbean among others.  During the three-week exchange the participants visited several places including Washington, DC; Kalamazoo, Michigan; New Orleans, Louisiana; Denver, Colorado and Seattle, Washington.

The program focused on U.S. best practices in supporting disadvantaged youth in danger of academic failure and life-long economic disenfranchisement.  It examined urban and rural support systems that have been created to support academic success.  Participants also explored efforts to combat teen pregnancy and keep youth out of gangs and off the streets, including after-school and summer programs run by grassroots and national organizations.
