Nassau, Bahamas -  In an effort, to increase the blood supply levels in the Bahamas, to encourage first time blood donors and established donors to donate blood and to commit to regular donations throughout the year as well as to educate the community about the benefits of blood donation, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Pi Xi Chapter & One Blood will host a Corporate Blood Drive. At the event, World Blood Donor Day will be celebrated under the theme, “Every Blood Donor is a Hero!” The Princess Margaret Hospital & Doctor’s Hospital Blood Banks will be on hand to collect blood from donors.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Pi Xi Chapter in conjunction with One Blood have coupled their efforts to ensure the success of the Corporate Blood Donor Drive on World Blood Donor Day and is encouraging Corporate Bahamas to commit to raising the awareness of the importance of blood donation. Corporate Bahamas is invited to encourage their employees to attend the event as a team and donate blood. Giving blood takes only a few minutes and saves dozens of lives.

WHO: Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Pi Xi Chapter & One Blood
WHEN: Thursday, June 14, 2012; 10:00am – 4:00pm
WHERE: Rawson Square, Nassau, Bahamas

WHY: Pause for a moment. Imagine needing a life-saving procedure, only to find out that the hospital does not have enough blood for you.  This is the scenario that many Bahamians face each day because the blood supply at our hospitals is dangerously low.  Without blood donors who will consistently give blood, all Bahamians are at risk.

As we celebrate World Blood Donor Day, globally under the theme, “Every Blood Donor is a Hero!”  Every one of us can become a hero by donating blood. Silent and unsung heroes save lives every day through their blood donations and Bahamians are encouraged to donate on a consistent basis.  The transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year globally. It improves life expectancy and the quality of life for patients suffering from life-threatening conditions and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. In the Bahamas, demand outpaces supply and we face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while ensuring quality and safety.

Corporate Blood Drive has been created and introduced as an activity for World Blood Donor Day 2012 by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Pi Xi chapter and One Blood to deliver an urgent wake-up call to all Bahamians. The appeal is open to the general public but is especially made to companies as it is well understood that the most important asset of a company is its human resources and this event serves as a reminder that good health is highly valued.

The goal for the event is to increase the blood supply levels in the Bahamas, to encourage first time blood donors and established donors to donate blood and to commit to regular donations throughout the year. The event will also educate the community about the benefits of blood donation.
