On Tuesday, June 28, 2016, The College of The Bahamas welcomed Leandra Mackey, 2016 President’s Scholar for the newest arm of the President’s Scholars Programme (PSP) experience, pre-orientation. The pre-orientation platform was intentionally designed for incoming Scholars to become oriented to campus life and to begin relationship-building with key staff and faculty at The College prior to the formal orientation and advisement process.
Mackey, a Biochemistry major, who will attend The College this Fall, engaged essential college representatives in the persons of Dr. Eslyn Jones, Vice President, Student Affairs, Dr. Veronica Toppin, Chairperson, of Chemistry and Environmental Life Sciences (CELS) and Joyann Thompson, Assistant Professor, Biology. Advice to Mackey ranged from how to manage the rigors of college life to offerings of support to undergird her healthy, happy learning experience, at The College. Along with the financial provision given to the PSP Scholar, Mackey also has available to her mentorship from President Dr. Rodney D. Smith, access to a scholar study lounge, leadership coaching, counselling and health support, opportunities to study abroad and the list goes on.
On June 10, 2016, Mackey was awarded a $40,000, 4-year scholarship to attend The College of the Bahamas. She would have beaten out some 30 of her fellow classmates from The Government High School for the award. During the orientation Mackey proclaimed, “I’m going to do this [programme] proud and do better than [the] 3.5 [GPA].” The College supports her at every level during her college career and anticipates that she, along with fellow 2015 scholar Elise Barnett, will do well in the coming semester.
The President’s Scholars Programme is a prestigious academic and leadership development programme offered by The College to incoming freshman who have distinguished themselves in scholarship, leadership and service. The programme is made available to Bahamian high school seniors who are accepted to The College as incoming, first-time, first-year students with and have distinguished themselves with high academic acumen.
