Family Island heroes are often forgotten, hidden behind the curtain of prestige that opens mostly for achievers on New Providence or Grand Bahama. However, the latest edition of the programme 'A Familiar Walk', which airs this week, will be a tribute to the cornerstones of a Palmetto Point, Eleuthera family.

This Bahamian Hero’s edition honours Jospeh and Alfreda Deal on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding anniversary and the accession of Mr. Deal to the rank of Corp Sergeant Major of the Salvation Army in Palmetto Point - he is the first Bahamian to hold this rank - and his promotion to Pastor of his church. .

Mr. Mario Newry, the host of the show, celebrated with the entire Deal family as they celebrated the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. And Mrs. Deal.

“There are many Bahamians trying to make a difference and who rarely receive the media attention they deserve," said Mr. Newry. "The latest installment of A Familiar Walk, Bahamian Heroes Edition, is our small attempt to provide better balance in our broadcast programming schedule. We profile Bahamians who do not go looking for attention, but deserve it; Bahamian heroes who through their ideas, efforts and dedication are making a difference in the lives of others.”

During the television programme, the Deal family talks of their participation at the Salvation Army in Palmetto Point, reaching out to the less fortunate. And they reminisce on the past 50 years of marital bliss and life in slow-paced Palmetto Point.

Mrs. Deal, who has known the show's host since he was a boy with pet hamsters, said she thanks God for the roles she has been able to play in lives of her family members and the people of the small settlement of Palmetto Point.

Mr. Deal spoke at length about his family and linked their "special" Deal-bond with the importance love and the need for more appreciation in the nation's families. “Love is what our country needs most," Mr. Deal said.

As the new Corp Sergeant Major of the Salvation Army, he does what he can to make this sentiment a reality.

During the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary events, their entire family came together with close friends; thus the one wish that both Mr. and Mrs. Deal had came true. "All we wanted was for the family to come together and to celebrate as one," they said.

This next memorable edition of A Familiar Walk will be aired on Z.N.S. TV 13 on Wednesday, March 16th, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, March 24th, 2016 at 8:30 p.m.
