On Saturday, 14th May 2016, the Sunrise Rotary Club and its Rotoract Club from the Leadership Academy, spent the day painting the Lillian Hall Activity Centre at Camp Discovery on Marshall Road. Under the leadership of Rotarian Archdeacon James Palacious, his Club continues its generous and supportive partnership which commenced some two years ago.

Over the years, they have painted the interior of the Thelma Gibson Brownie Hut and adjoining shower facilities and the Kitchen and dining rooms. Additionally, they have provided picnic benches and tables for the Marjorie Davis Retreat and built benches for the Quiet Place in the Barbara Brown Legacy area. Archdeacon Palacious remarked that his Club was pleased to continue the partnership with the Girl Guides as the Association has one hundred years experience of positively influencing the lives of girls and young women in The Bahamas. Mrs. Elma Garraway, Assistant Chief Commissioner and chairperson of the Properties Committee thanked Sunrise Rotary and invited the Rotoract members to enjoy the natural environment at Camp Discovery. She also invited Sunrise to assist with an upcoming environmental project expected to be implemented in early July.

With the support of the Bahamas National Trust, Camp Discovery will have a survey of the native plants on the site. It will be led by Dr. Ethan Freid, a botanist with Levy Centre on Eleuthera. With the assistance of Dr. Maurice Isaacs, Council Member, guides, rangers and leaders, nature trails will be laid leading to age appropriate challenges, incorporating the entire campsite. Additionally, a special area will be identified for an obstacle nature course for Brownies, and trees will be labelled. It is expected that these new initiatives will not only increase the knowledge of the Guides about the natural environment , but also lead to an appreciation for and preservation of the flora and fauna of The Bahamas.

Mrs. Anita Bernard, President; Mrs. Clarice Granger, Assistant Chairperson of the Properties Committee and Mrs. Avis Richardson, Camp Warden accompanied Dr.Freid and Miss Giselle Dean of the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) on a tour of the 8acre Camp Discovery. Mrs. Bernard expressed her appreciation to Dr. Freid and the BNT for what will be a significant contribution to the Girl Guides Programme.
