S.T.R.A.W. Inc. Holds 13th Annual Girls Leadership Conference

S.T.R.A.W. Inc. TM Center for Young Women ©’s 13th Annual Girls Leadership Conference was held on Friday 17 March 2017 at Super Clubs Breezes Resort, Nassau, New Providence.

Aptly dubbed the premier gender based leadership conference for Bahamian teen girls and young women, the one-day leadership event highlighted its theme as “Leaping Toward Your Destiny.”

This year’s conference was dedicated to the memory of Mr. Lionel Elliott, S.T.R.A.W. Inc. Advisory Council Member, former Executive Director of Junior Achievement Bahamas and Senior Trainer, Ministry of Tourism.

The leadership training event featured an official opening ceremony, general sessions, plenary leadership break-out sessions, and the much anticipated Women in Leadership Panel Discussion with Mrs. Arinthia Komolafe, DNA (Killarney) Candidate; Mrs. Cheryl Bazard, PLP (St. Barnabas) Candidate; and Ms. Terneille Burrows, Independent (Elizabeth) Candidate.

Opening Ceremony Speakers included Mr. Lionel Sands, Director of Education, Mr. Randy Rolle, Consul General, Atlanta, USA, Pastor Dianne Coverley, Church of God of Prophecy and Mrs. Anne Marie Davis, patron and wife of Deputy Prime Minister.

Olympian, Leevan “Superman” Sands delivered an attention grabbing pre-conference Skype-influenced video designed to set the stage and underscore the conference theme by sharing his intriguing journey to success.

Other Conference presenters included: Mrs. Agatha Marcelle, Executive Director, National Training Agency; Ms. Arleen Genuino, Vice Consul, US Embassy; Mr. Gregory Bethel, President, Fidelity Bank; Mr. Valdez Russell, Motivational Entrepreneur; Ms. Natasha Brown, Nutritional and Fitness Expert; Mr. Xavier Knowles, Motivational Entrepreneur; Mr. Keith Kemp, Pastor and Community Leader; Mrs. Denise Major-Curry, Executive Director, Bahamas Sexual Health; Sgt. Strachan, Royal Bahamas Police Force; Ms. Nekisha Rolle, Educator and Motivational Entrepreneur; Mr. Vicente Roberts, Clinical Psychologist and Ms. Gayle Hamilton, Bahamas National Drug Council.

Other experts tackled such topics as: Interpersonal Relationships, Global Citizenship, Money Management, Mental and Emotional Health, Career Decisions, and Personal Branding.

Musical Performers included Bodine, Deiahjae Forbes, Lenelle Michelle, Frozen Characters, Sapphire J and Special Blend, the award winning band from St. John’s College High School.

Nearly 500 conference participants represented various public and private primary, junior and senior high schools and tertiary institutions throughout New Providence and the Family Islands.

The purpose of the Annual Girls Leadership Conference® is to bring together primary, junior, senior high school and first year college female students; to challenge, to inspire, to motivate; connect and give them tools that will assist them in achieving academic excellence and developing personal responsibility.
