Nassau, Bahamas - Phi Beta Sigma Bahamas
will take a 12 man contingent that will represent the Bahamas in
Washington DC at the members-only Centennial celebration set for July 16-20
and will host more than 4,000 brothers from
over 5 countries. The Sigmas plan to further talks with the
fraternity's international leaders on the historical hosting of their
General Board meeting during November 2014 in Nassau, Bahamas, promote
the fraternity's Bahamian presence and celebrate their
centennial.
"We are excited about the opportunity to
represent the Bahamas and continuing plans to host the General Board
(the f\governing body of the fraternity) in Nassau," said Gerrard Sawyer
– Sigma Bahamas state director. "The availability
of hotel rooms, the proximity of The Bahamas to the USA, our hospitable
people and the contributions of Bahamians or decedents who have made
significant contributions to the fraternity's history such as Bro. James
Weldon Johnson – 8th National President
of Phi Beta Sigma made the Bahamas an excellent choice."
During the historic Sigma Centennial the
brothers will partake in the over 8 official events. The Bahamas will
have representation on the historic Centennial Sigma 100 Step Team.
Additionally, there is a planned courtesy call
at The Bahamas Embassy in Washington DC. The event will climax with a
Blue & White Orchid Ball on July 19 where the brothers plan to showcase a taste of The Bahamas by wearing royal blue and white androsia bowties.
"It is our hope that after showcasing the
Bahamas to our general fraternal body in Washington DC and hosting the
final General Board meeting in Nassau, Bahamas during the centennial
year that we will be favorably considered to
host the 2016 Phi Beta Sigma Southern Regional conference in April 2016
which would attractive up to 200 men of sigma, their wives and families
for a weekend," added Derek W. Smith Jr – president of the Delta
Epsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded on
January 9, 1914 at Howard University. The local chapter keeps the public
