Family members of the late Sir Randol Fawkes visited the College of The Bahamas on May 14th to present partial scholarships to five students who participated in the Sir Randol Fawkes Scholarship Award Essay Competition. An amount of $7,000:00 was raised for this event through donations from Sir Randol’s family and from friends who were desirous of supporting and promoting the late Labour leader’s legacy. The family hopes that this introduction to Sir Randol will inspire the youth to likewise commit their lives to service and to the improvement of the lives of others.
This year students were required to write an essay focusing on the contributions of members of The Bahamas Federation of Labour. Rosalie Fawkes, daughter of Sir Randol said that 2015 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Federation and it was important to highlight the contributions of a people who, though lacking a formal education and recognition of their human worth, were able to unite and use their collective power to bring about change in the country. She said that their courage was to be admired and that they should not be forgotten.
The awardees for 2015 were Trishka Humes, Nathaniel Adams, D'Andrea Huyler, Michelle Butler, Keith Gray and Enrico Bain.
In attendance at the ceremony were Cheryl Carey, Director of Financial Aid at C.O.B.; Jannah Khalfani, President of The Bahamas Nurses Union; Rosalie Fawkes, Nathaniel Adams (C.O.B. student); Fred Munnings, Director of Communications C.B.T.U.C.; D'Andrea Huyler (C.O.B. student); David Fawkes; Julian Mullings, Secretary General of The Bahamas Nurses' Union and Davinia Bain, Director of Development at C.O.B.
