Hon Perry Christie, MP On the passing of Mr. Edmund Moxey Former Member Of Parliament 21st July 2014 It is with deep regret that I learned of the passing of Mr. Edmund Moxey, a former Member of Parliament, a cultural warrior, musician extraordinaire and a community activist of the first order. On behalf of the Government and people of The Bahamas, and in a very personal way, I wish to extend deepest condolences to his widow, Sylvia, and to the Moxey family at this time of loss and bereavement. The late Edmund Moxey was a man who straddled many worlds. His early life was spent as a Bahamas Telecommunications Wireless operator in his native Ragged Island, in Crooked Island and in Coopers Town, Abaco before moving to Nassau. It was in these remote communities that he came to understand the challenges of life in Bahamas in the fifties and early sixties. He will be best remembered, however, for his many years of fearless involvement in front line politics as one of the youthful members of the Progressive Liberal Party and in particular, its activist wing, the National Committee for Positive Action. History will recall that Ed Moxey was among the group of PLP members elected to the House of Assembly in the historic General Election of January 10th, 1967 that ushered in Majority Rule. He served in the Honourable House of Assembly until 1977. He subsequently left the PLP but continued to be involved in politics in various capacities. Ed Moxey was particularly proud of his accomplishments as Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development from 1968-1971. It was in this role that he began the development of “Jumbey Village” – a themed village that was designed to give expression to the cultural heritage of the Bahamian people. I am particularly pleased that just two weeks ago, on the occasion of the 41st Anniversary of the Independence of The Bahamas, Ed was recognized and honoured as a Bahamian Cultural icon. It was a well-deserved accolade. Ed Moxey was a true Bahamian patriot and his passing will leave a void in the political and cultural life of our nation. May he rest in peace.
