Sunshine Insurance-Elmira Top 10 Essay Finalists announced

NASSAU, Bahamas – Ten students from throughout the country are about to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships.

Sunshine Insurance (Agents & Brokers) Ltd. and Elmira College recently announced the top 10 finalists for this year’s competition.

Danielle Brown of Queen's College, Lyric Lightbourn of C.V. Bethel Senior High School, Britani Silvera of Lyford Cay International School, Arianna Millsap of Aquinas College, Jason Deveaux of Jordan Prince William, Eleni Tolas of NGM Major, Yana Swain of Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Academy, Kiante Stuart of C.R. Walker Senior High School, Taelor Goffe, who is home schooled and Rakell Riley of Central Andros High were announced as the finalists.

The competition will take place on Saturday, December 9th.

The top winner will win a $60,000 scholarship to attend Elmira College. Three runners-up will each receive $30,000 to attend the school.

Students were asked to write essays that explained what product or service they would create if given the opportunity to start a new business.

They will have to then present their ideas before a panel of judges.

The students will be judged out of 100 points: communication skills and demonstration of knowledge will account for 40 points each and originality and feasibility of idea will account for 20 points.

Last year, Yamille Moss, an Aquinas College student, won the top prize. She presented a plan to lower the country’s food import bill.

Elmira College is a private, liberal arts college located in upstate New York.

It has been ranked as one of the top regional colleges by the 2014 edition of Best colleges.

Sunshine Insurance is grateful for the opportunity to work with Elmira College to continually assist young Bahamian students achieve their goals of successful tertiary education.
