The Bahamian Icon Rising Star Scholarship Grant Awarded

Nassau, Bahamas - An academically exceptional student at The College of The Bahamas Northern Bahamas Campus in Grand Bahama is the first recipient of The Bahamian Icon Rising Scholars Award, a scholarship funded primarily through the efforts of The Bahamian Icon Awards Organizing Committee which honours excellence and inspiring achievement in The Bahamas.
 
Ms. Juriquel Thompson was selected to receive the merit award presented annually to a full-time COB student enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme with a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.00. Juriquel, who epitomizes academic excellence and leadership, received the award on Wednesday, October 2nd from Mr. Addis T. Huyler, Founder and Executive Producer of The Bahamian Icon Awards, and COB administrators.
 
"The Bahamian Icon Awards Organization is incredibly pleased to present this award to Ms. Juriquel Thompson, a Northern Bahamas Campus second-year student majoring in Social Work. Ms. Thompson, currently has a 3.58 grade point average and aspires to open a home for at-risk women and the elderly,” said Mr. Huyler.  "It is very important for us, as an organization, to not only recognize outstanding Bahamians, but also to use our platform to significantly affect the lives of future Icons in a very tangible way.  We are proud to stand with The College of The Bahamas establishing this scholarship grant and are looking forward to exploring additional ways that we can contribute to the development of our Bahamian youth in the coming years."
 
Juriquel was both honoured and pleased to have been selected for the award, which will allow her to fulfil her higher education goals. “I was so surprised when I received the call saying I had received the scholarship. I was really praying for a scholarship and God answered my prayers,” she said.

College of The Bahamas President, Dr. Betsy Vogel-Boze, applauded the Bahamian Icon Award Organizing Committee for its philanthropy and investment in the future of The Bahamas. “It is a real a privilege for The College of The Bahamas to partner with you on the establishment of the Bahamian Icon Rising Star Scholarship. The College is in the business of helping young people fulfill their dreams and to reach their potential. So this award is a great personification of those dreams coming true,” Dr. Vogel-Boze noted.
 
The Bahamian Icon Rising Star Scholars Programme is funded by part proceeds from The Bahamian Icon Awards.  The inaugural event was held July 13th, 2013 at the Independence Ballroom of the Sheraton Cable Beach Resort where Icons were honoured in 10 different categories.  The next event will be held on July 12th, 2014.
