Nassau, Bahamas - Visiting from California, Bahamian-American engineer, Aisha Bowe hosted a successful presentation at the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture on Thursday evening, August 30th. Students attended, as well as parents, teachers, and even a defence force officer, who all showed up to learn more about Aisha's amazing path to becoming an award-winning researcher at NASA.

Aisha shared her story of struggle and triumph, and recalled feeling like so many other young people who are still trying to figure out who they are. She shared a story of a time in school when she was advised by a guidance counsellor to pursue cosmetology, as she didn't see her amounting to anything much more. Although Aisha feels that cosmetology is a great field if you pursue it to the best of your ability, the teacher's comments at the time were not meant to be encouraging - and Aisha felt that.

She told the students that if anyone in their lives ever told them that they couldn't do something, they should use it as impetus to prove them wrong. Miss Bowe also advised them to work at things they love to do; and never choose a career path for the money, rather, choose a path that will reward them with a lifetime of self fulfillment.

Aeronautics is a field that, although many kids are interested in it, they may view it as a daunting task.  But Aisha stands as proof that people from The Bahamas and of Bahamian parentage can make it to the top in any corner of the earth.

Aisha is working on research that will help to make the flight path for airplanes safer - and that's something everyone can benefit from.

Aisha Bowe is an award-winning researcher in the Flight Trajectory Dynamics & Controls Branch of the Aviation Systems Division at NASA Ames Research Center.  Earlier this year Ms. Bowe led an effort to bring a College of the Bahamas student, Mr. Terran Arnold on a 8-week internship at NASA Ames. She hopes to engage the local government and civic organizations on supporting student initiatives such as this.
