The Grand Bahama American Women’s Club (GBAWC) has awarded 13 scholarships to local high school students who demonstrated academic excellence and extracurricular achievement.

The students attend Bishop Michael Eldon, Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Academy, Sunland Baptist Academy, Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy and St. Paul’s Methodist College.

Founded in 1966, the GBAWC stages an annual golf tournament to raise money for the scholarships as well as community programs. Six organizations that support children’s summer camps received funding, including Rand Nature Center, the Salvation Army, the YMCA, Girl Guides, the Sailing Club and the Children’s Library.

In addition to the monies raised by the yearly golf classic, and new this year, seven scholarships were funded by Grand Bahama donors.

The GBAWC welcomes women of all nationalities, and in 2018 amended its bylaws to enable non-Americans to run for executive offices. Social activities include a monthly luncheon at local restaurants and members’ homes, and the New Adventure Bound program.
