URCA supports the promotion of the STEM disciplines to students

The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority, (URCA), supported two Science, Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) camps this summer; the Bahamas Engineering and Technology Advancement (BETA) and “HACK IT” camps. The camps aimed to foster a greater awareness of and aptitude for STEM amongst young Bahamian students from the family islands as well as New Providence. The BETA camp catered to junior high school students and the “HACK IT” camp was for senior high school students.

Support for the camps is in keeping with the spirit of The Bahamas Government’s Electronic Communication Sector (ECS) Policy which seeks to promote the ECS as the artery through which Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) enable social and economic development. Through its activities, URCA strongly encourages and where possible promotes the growth, use of and access to ICTs by both the young and old. Mrs. Kathleen Riviere-Smith, URCA’s CEO, said “We here at URCA are honoured to have played a small role in these activities and look forward to being a part of future endeavours”.
