URCA denies reported censorship of local artist’s song

The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) notes the assertions appearing on the front page of a local newspaper, which suggests that URCA has banned a song by a prominent local artist,from being played on radio stations in The Bahamas. URCA advises that it has neither banned nor taken any other action to prevent the airing of any song on any radio station or other content provider.Further, URCA has neither investigated, nor been invited or requested to investigate, any issues connected thereto.

The public is reminded that as the Regulator for the Electronic Communications Sector in the Bahamas, which includes Broadcasting, URCA’s jurisdiction is subject to Part IX of the Communications Act and supplemented by the Code of Practice for Content Regulation, ECS 06/2012, (the Code) which can be found on its website at http://www.urcabahamas.bs/download/006391300.pdf. It should be noted that URCA’s jurisdiction thereunder does not include any power to censor content prior to its broadcast, and therefore URCA is not empowered to “ban” any content.
