Grand Bahama – University of The Bahamas-North will be hosting a conference focused on the economic prospects of the island of Grand Bahama. The Sustainable Grand Bahama Conference is being held 5th – 6th April 2018 under the theme, “Breaking Down Barriers, Shaping the Future.”

Public and private sector leaders, academics, civil society organizations and opinion shapers have been invited to engage in a robust dialogue about the way forward for Grand Bahama. The guiding concept is sustainability.

Vice President of UB-North, Dr. Ian Strachan, says the conference is intended to address some important questions such as, “How should Grand Bahama grow? What are the missing ingredients to economic growth; growth that not only benefits multi-national corporations but Grand Bahamians of all walks of life? And how do we ensure that the economic growth we seek is sustainable and informed by all the hard lessons we’ve learned thus far?”

Grand Bahama Power Company is the Gold Sponsor for the event which is intended to take a holistic view of the issue of sustainable development.

Among the invited guests are: Prime Minister, Dr. Hon. Hubert Minnis; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. K. Peter Turnquest; entrepreneur and Chair of Grand Bahama Tech Hub Steering Committee Dr. Donovan Moxey; Chief Executive Officer of the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation Edison Sumner and Executive Director of The Bahamas National Trust Eric Carey.

“One of the most common criticisms I hear of the University is that we are simply not pulling our weight when it comes to joining critical national conversations about economic, social and educational policy,” says Dr. Strachan. “The Sustainable Grand Bahama Conference is an example of what we can do to promote thought leadership in the country. Grand Bahama is poised for transformation.  The government is intensely focused on it and UB wants to help in whatever ways it can to ensure the future is a very, very bright one for Grand Bahamians and the country at large.”

In addition to presentations by government officials, academics, business professionals, environmentalists and civic leaders, the conference will also feature a number of student presentations. Science students from UB-North are slated to present their research on climate change and architecture students will share their work on a sustainable master plan design for the UB-North campus.

“The committee is very excited,” says Dr. Peter McWilliam, Dean of Faculty at UB-North. “We want to thank our Gold Sponsor, GB Power for partnering with us and our Silver Sponsors, Insurance Management and Rev TV as well.  Their engagement lets us know we’re on the right track.”

Dr. Strachan adds that he expects other sponsors to come on board soon.

The Sustainable Grand Bahama conference opens on Thursday, 5th April 2018 at the Grand Lucayan Convention Centre at 8:30 a.m.. The second day will take participants to the UB-North campus for another full slate of presentations and discussions with a 9:00 a.m. start.
