Nassau, Bahamas  – Co-chair of Urban Renewal Commission, Cynthia “Mother” Pratt along with seven members of the Urban Renewal Commission paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, the Honourable Jerome K. Fitzgerald, to present reading comprehension strategy kits to be distributed to schools throughout The Bahamas.

The reading kits that were donated by a husband and wife team from the United States of America are for students in grades one to six. The comprehension strategy kits address six critical comprehension skills, calling for students to:

1.    monitor and clarify,

2.    make connections,

3.    visualize,

4.    ask questions,

5.    predict, and

6.    summarize.

Minister Fitzgerald alluded to some of the changes that are occurring in education in an attempt to ensure that all students are given the tools to succeed. “We have turned the system upside down and have placed greater focus on those students in the bottom 50%, the under-performers who are falling through the cracks.” As the MoEST focuses on increasing the graduation rate from 50% to 80% by 2030, literacy will play a pivotal role in student success.

The research-based kits are proven to be highly effective and are designed to raise reading achievement, meet curriculum reading standards and give children confidence in reading. The components of the kits include: modeling transparencies, interactive practice cards, leveled student selections and teacher’s guide and resource CD.

Cynthia “Mother” Pratt expressed her gratitude to the couple who shall remain anonymous and considers the donation a blessing. “We are blessed because they could have sent these books to any other country but chose to send them to The Bahamas.”

Urban Renewal, although most known for its youth programmes as well as its home repair programme has taken a keen interest in literacy and promotes the importance of literacy and numeracy development. Urban Renewal has a literacy coordinator, Mrs. Troy Oliver and a book depository located at the Mabel Walker Institute for Professional Development.

Minister Fitzgerald thanked “Mother” Pratt for making the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology the beneficiary of these books and stated that all islands would receive kits. “These books will be distributed throughout the country, not just New Providence to ensure equity in the system.”
