Nassau, New Providence - Royal Star Assurance recently presented a sponsorship cheque to Bahamian meteorologist and best-selling author Wayne Neely for his latest book on hurricanes called, ‘The Greatest and Deadliest Hurricanes of The Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Americas.’

This new book will be released in July of this year. It highlights some of the greatest and the deadliest hurricanes of The Bahamas, Caribbean and the Americas and because of the recent record breaking damage that these hurricanes have inflicted to us here in The Bahamas and the region as a whole; it is a very timely book.

"In most cases, I often tell Bahamian residents that one of the main ways in which they can prepare for these storms is by taking out hurricane insurance and having a household plan in the event a major hurricane affects them in some way or the other," said Neely.

"After Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne and Wilma devastated Grand Bahama, I visited several of the settlements affected by these hurricanes and the damage from these hurricanes were astounding and it was even more hurtful to find out that many of the homes were not insured and sadly they had to rely on help from the government and private donors to bring their lives back to some degree of normalcy. In many cases, these hurricanes destroyed everything they owned including, their cars, homes and boats."

"Over the years I have written 9 books on deadly and destructive Bahamian hurricanes," said the author.  "Many of these storms changed to course of Bahamian history and impacted The Bahamas for years to follow. In fact, it is fair to say that Frances and Jeanne in 2004 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005 devastated Grand Bahama and even to this day 11 and 10 years later they are still feeling the reprecussions from this storm and to a lesser extent the entire Bahamas. The sponsorship from these insurance companies have allowed me to document these storms and in the final analysis their impact on the Bahamian society."

Over the years Neely  has developed a mutually beneficial relationship with several of the major insurance companies in The Bahamas. He includes their companies contact information in his books for a small fee and they benefit from the readers deciding to take out some form of hurricane insurance when they read his books. Many of these companies have already seen a gradual increase in hurricane insurance, especially in Nassau, Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera.

"I do this because travelling throughout the Bahamas after several major hurricanes (including, Hurricanes Floyd, Andrew, Frances, Jeanne, Wilma and Sandy) I have seen firsthand the destructiveness of a major hurricane in The Bahamas and I have also come to realize that a large percentage of the Bahamian population are virtually uninsured and as a result, they had to rely on the goodwill of the Bahamas Government of the day."
