Nassau, Bahamas - The gospel music community was out in full force on Sunday July 5th at the Diplomat Center for the inaugural edition of the Bahamas Independence Gospel Celebration. The event was developed to create a platform for local churches including the gospel music community to celebrate the country’s upcoming 42nd independence.

A number of top gospel artists participated including Joann Callendar who kicked of the event with a heart stopping rendition of the country’s National Anthem. She was followed by a string of back to back performances from a number of award winning artists including Shaback, Terrance Forbes, Edison Sumner & Voices of Praise, Tamika Smith, Hubert McIntosh, The Rahming Brothers, Big Bruh, Emily Williams, V-Mac, Monique Terez, Colyn Major, Al Gibson, F.U.E.L Nation and the Singing Bishop and Prophet Lawrence Rolle.

There were also a number of choirs that participated including the Bahamas National Children’s Choir who under the direction of cultural legend Patricia Bazard captured the attention as well as the hearts of those in attendance with number of inspiring selections. Then there was the Royal Bahamas Police Force Choir who brought the house to its feet with a passionate performance of a medley of gospel classics.

One of the most dynamic performances came from newcomer and first time Marlin Award winner Shanique Thurston who exhilarated the audience with her performance of the old hymn “Tis So Sweet”. However it was the ministry in music by Bahamian gospel legend Mother Rachael Mackey who stole the night with her powerhouse performance of a number of traditional songs that was by far one of the evening’s most memorable experiences.

The night was not just about music, there were a number of special presentations in honor of several well known Bahamians who recently passed away. The leader of the Opposition the Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis was on hand and presented the award in honor of  Dr. Myles Munroe and Pastor Ruth Ann Munroe to their children, Myles Jr (Chairo) Munroe and Charisa Munroe.
