Bahamian hip-hop artist, song writer, actress, dancer and model, Hollie Wood has released her second single, "My Story" and says that through the song she hopes to "bring awareness
that the women who society, the media, and through most rap songs may view as whores, are
also people and have a powerful story to tell."
"This song was in my heart
for a long time," said Hollie. "... from perhaps my preteens. I suffered from low self-esteem and
I found myself accepting and being in relationships I shouldn’t have
been in (abusive relationships). I also witnessed or heard about what other young girls
went through in their home. Things like
molestation, rejection from a father, prostitution, the list goes
on."
Born and raised in Freeport, The Bahamas, Patricia aka Hollie Wood and
her family made the move to the “The city”, Nassau when she was 16 years
old. Patricia grew a strong love for music, acting and entertainment at
a young age. As a toddler you would have spotted her dancing and
singing around the house. She was well known in school for her love for
dancing, rapping, modeling and acting. Music became her way of escape
and expressing her pain, struggles and joy.
It didn't take long
for Patricia to become known in school for creating dance groups,
modeling groups, and writing and composing music to perform to. She
found love, acceptance, and purpose in her art, and that gave her
courage to face the world.
"
Her Story is a
statement to this generation that before you talk about how a person
dresses, acts, or what they've done, realize that you don’t know
their story, therefore you don’t know their pain… Reach out to help, rather than
gossip, judge or criticize."
The name Hollie Wood later came when she became a dancer at a few night clubs. She decided to keep the name as a statement that no matter where you came from, no matter how hard life was, no matter what mistakes you made, always follow your dreams! In her adult life she landed acting roles in a few plays and T.V. sitcoms and is most known for playing the role of Ms Bullard on the televised Bahamian soap opera,
Gippies Kingdom, Season One and Two. She quickly rediscovered her passion for music in 2014 when she recorded her first single “So Fly” and later this second single, “Her Story.”
Some of Hollie’s musical influences are, but not limited to Lauryn Hill, Missy Eliot, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Outcast, Busta Rhymes, Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé, Alanis Morsette, Green Day, Pink, Mya, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Monica, Brandy, Toni Braxton, Azeaila Banks, India Irie, and Erika Badu.
